History of Shakopee, MN

The city is named after Chief Shakopee of the Dakota tribe. Thomas Holmes established the trading post in 1851 and platted the village in 1854. The small settlement quickly grew and by 1857 incorporation to cityhood reached.  The Dakota war saw it surrendering its charter in 1861 but regained incorporation in 1870 when tensions lifted.
